Onychomycosis, commonly known as nail fungus, is a fungal infection of the nail that typically appears as thickening and discoloration, often accompanied by debris accumulating beneath the nail plate.

The primary risk factor is coexisting athlete’s foot (tinea pedis).

Additional risk factors include diabetes mellitus, peripheral vascular disease, immunosuppression, obesity, malignancy, nail trauma, advanced age, excessive sweating, and the use of tight or non-breathable footwear.
