Eczema

Eczema is a chronic inflammatory skin condition affecting individuals of all ages, though often starting in childhood. It disrupts the skin’s barrier function causing dryness, inflammation, and itching. While the exact cause remains unknown, genetics and environmental triggers, such as cold and dry weather, frequent hand washing and sweating, play a significant role.

The condition can range from mild dryness to persistent rashes, and it may appear on the hands, body, or face. Multiple types of eczema exist including atopic dermatitis, hand eczema, nummular dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and dyshidrotic dermatitis.

Dr. Adam Nabatian, a double board-certified dermatologist, approaches eczema by identifying the unique combination of factors affecting each patient — from genetics and skin barrier function to potential allergens. Treatments are tailored and may include:

  • Moisturizers

  • Topical steroid or non-steroidal prescription therapies

  • Biologic medications

When allergies are suspected, Dr. Nabatian may perform patch testing to pinpoint triggers. Alongside medical treatments, he emphasizes practical skin care routines to strengthen the skin barrier and reduce flare-ups.
