Melasma
Melasma is a pigmentary disorder that appears as brown or tan patches on the face, often on the cheeks, forehead, and upper lip. It can develop in anyone but is most frequently seen in women and in individuals with medium to darker skin tones, particularly those of Hispanic, Asian, Indian, Middle Eastern, African, and Mediterranean descent. Sun exposure, hormonal changes (such as during pregnancy or from oral contraceptives), and genetics all contribute to its development.
At Premier Dermatology & Aesthetics, Dr. Adam Nabatian, double board-certified dermatologist, creates customized treatment plans that address both existing pigmentation and long-term maintenance. Options may include:
Prescription topical treatments to reduce pigment production and fade discoloration
Medical-grade skincare: At-home products formulated with antioxidants, retinoids, and sun protection — available in-office, including our antioxidant sunscreens and brightening serums — help maintain results and prevent new pigmentation.
In-office chemical peels to even out skin texture
Laser therapies to break up persistent pigment
Preventing future flare-ups is just as important as treating current pigmentation. We emphasize daily sun protection using broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher and other lifestyle strategies to minimize triggers that worsen melasma.
If you have melasma, schedule a consultation with Dr. Nabatian for evaluation and to get started on a tailored treatment plan.
